One Step Closer to the House

VIGIL THANKS VOTERS FOR SUPPORT IN PRIMARY ELECTION

Edward Vigil Holding Election SignTuesday, August 12th, election outcome and triumph was phenomenal. Congratulatory calls to my campaign office were received until the early a.m. Winning this election makes me proud of the campaign we ran. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU that supported me in this election; the voters and supporters in-and-out of HD-62, volunteers, sponsors, collaborators, co-workers and endorsements I received throughout Primary election.

This was a broad and hard-fought victory and voters in HD-62 have moved me one step closer to serving in the State House of Representatives. WITHOUT YOU, NONE OF THIS WOULD BE POSSIBLE! A lot of time and effort went into this campaign by many. Your hard work, drive and commitment for a stronger HD-62 have paid off. Some counted me out of the race and were certain I would drop out because I did not receive the required delegation votes at the Colorado State Democratic Convention. However, mid-May I petitioned my way on the ballot. It was a difficult campaign but I had over-whelming support throughout House District 62. Today, WE ARE ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE HOUSE!

I would like to extend a special THANKS to my friend, State Representative (elect) Sal Pace for volunteering to this campaign, Senator Abel Tapia, State Representative Buffie McFadyen, all from Pueblo for their endorsements and over-whelming support of confidence. In addition, thanks to all the other Democratic power-house endorsements also received from the Pueblo and Denver areas.

Together we are taking the knowledge and experience we have gained from this successful Primary campaign and moving to the next challenge - November General election where I will face off against opponent, Republican Randy Jackson. Meanwhile, I will campaign for your support—together we will make a difference!

Dr. White will make no ‘House’ call

By RUTH HEIDE

SAN LUIS — In a hard-fought battle for House District 62, Costilla County Commissioner Ed Vigil, 57, won the Democratic vote over opponent Rocky White by a two-to-won margin.

In an approximate total, Vigil received 3,139 votes to White’s 1,505.

The win was a complete opposite outcome from the May House District 62 Democratic Assembly where Dr. Rocky White took more than half of the delegates’ votes and Vigil did not receive enough votes to appear on the Primary ballot without collecting approximately 1,000 signatures to petition on to the ballot, a feat Vigil accomplished.

In May, Vigil had said, “We will see what the people decide in the end.”

The people decided overwhelmingly to put Vigil through to the November election.

Vigil will now face Republican Randy Jackson in the General Election this November. The winner of the November contest will follow Rafael Gallegos of Antonito into the state house.

In addition to taking every county in the San Luis Valley that lies in House District 62 except Mineral County, Vigil trampled White in the portion of Pueblo County that lies in the district with a whopping 840 votes to White’s 196 votes.

In White’s resident county of Conejos, the doctor received only 209 votes to Vigil’s 803 votes, and in Vigil’s home county of Costilla, Vigil received 654 votes to White’s 229.

Huerfano County was the closest for the two house seat candidates with Vigil receiving 37 votes to White’s 30 votes.

Alamosa County was also close with 472 votes for Vigil and 463 votes for White.

In Rio Grande County the race was also close with Vigil receiving 281 votes to White’s 262 votes.

Saguache County’s totals were still being tabulated by press time but would have had a negligible effect on the outcome.

The lone county showing more support for White than Vigil was Mineral County with 116 votes for White, twice as many as the 52 votes for Vigil.

Not having received enough delegate votes at the House District 62 assembly earlier this year, Vigil had to get on the Primary Election ballot the hard way by collecting signatures door to door.

“It’s been an incredible, incredible race,” Vigil said. “The people have been so friendly. The voters have been amazing. People just care.”

Vigil thanked those who helped with his campaign to this point particularly his wife Evelyn and House District 46 candidate Sal Pace.

Vigil said he was happy not only for himself but for the residents of House District 62. “I plan to represent them well. I have always said I am going to work for the working class and the poor. Hopefully we can get some things done.”

Vigil was raised in San Pablo near San Luis, graduated from Adams State College, owns Sangre de Cristo Laboratory with his wife, has served two terms as Costilla County Commissioner and has worked in various service roles including substance abuse counselor, peace officer and special investigator for the district attorney.
